Popper et Kuhn sur les choix inter-théoriques
Philosophia Scientiae, Tome 11 (2007) no. 1, pp. 99-130.

The paper offers a comparative analysis of Popper's and Kuhn's positions on four related points: the comparison of “theoretical frameworks” or “scientific paradigms”; the compelling power of the arguments involved in critical discussions; the factors that influence or should influence practitioners when they have to elect a theoretical framework to the detriment of another one; and the way each authors conceives what Kuhn called “normal science”. I start with the discussion of the accounts through which Popper explains why the scientific choices of Galilée and Kepler both satisfy the falsificationist methodology. From there I show, first, that according to the letter of such accounts, we must conclude that the unproblematic experimental data - the basic statements that all practitioners accept - are not in themselves sufficient to impose an empirical falsification de jure (since on the basis of the same measures of Tycho Brahe, Galilée has been right to admit that the hypothesis of circular orbits was empirically refutated, whereas Galilée has been right to admit the contrary). Then I show, second, that beyond the important differences we find between Popper's and Kuhn's vocabularies and ideals of science, Popper's methodology, although vindicated as “logical”, gives us nothing more than Kuhn's (often dismissed as sociological) conception, when one asks what a good scientist should do in revolutionary periods as well as in periods of normal science.
