La géométrie dans la géométrie des nombres : histoire de discipline ou histoire de pratiques à partir des exemples de Minkowski, Mordell et Davenport

La géométrie des nombres est un domaine des mathématiques le plus souvent caractérisé par l'utilisation de méthodes géométriques pour traiter des problèmes issus de la théorie des nombres. Mais comment identifier une méthode géométrique ? À travers les travaux de Hermann Minkowski, Louis Mordell et Harold Davenport, nous essayons de préciser quelle géométrie est en question dans leurs travaux de géométrie des nombres et comment elle intervient. Nous montrons non seulement que ce qui est considéré comme géométrique change chez ces mathématiciens ; mais aussi que la place accordée à la géométrie n'est pas exactement la même. Ceci nous amènera à interroger la valeur historiographique d'une catégorie comme « géométrique » et son rapport à la pratique mathématique.

The Geometry of Numbers is a specialty of mathematics which is often characterized by its use of geometric methods in dealing with number theoretic problems. But how does one identify a geometric method? We try to clarify the kind of geometry which is at stake in the geometry of numbers as it was practiced by Hermann Minkowski, by Louis Mordell and Harold Davenport. We find that not only does what is considered as geometric vary between these mathematicians, but also the role played by geometry is not quite the same. This suggests reflections on the historiographical use of such categories as “geometric” and on their relations to mathematical practice.
