Cet article examine une activité procédurale dénommée «jeux de ficelle» et pratiquée dans de nombreuses communautés de tradition orale. À partir de l'analyse de certaines sources ethnographiques, nous en présenterons deux modes de conceptualisation. Muni de ces outils conceptuels, nous montrerons que la création des jeux de ficelle provient d'un travail intellectuel autour des concepts de «procédure», d'«opération», de «sous-procédure», de «transformation» et d'«itération». Ce travail a consisté en l'élaboration d'algorithmes résultant d'investigations sur des configurations spatiales d'une grande complexité. De ce point de vue, l'objet «jeu de ficelle» apparaît comme le produit d'une activité mathématique.
This article examines the making of “string figures”, a procedural activity carried out in a number of traditional societies. From the analysis of some ethnographic documents, we will give two different conceptualizations of such objects. This will allow us to show that a string figure may be truly seen as the result of intellectual work, using concepts such as “procedures”, “operations”, “sub-procedures”, “iterations”, and “transformations”. This work involved the elaboration of algorithms based on investigations of complex spatial configurations. Approached in this way, “string figures” appear to be the product of a mathematical activity.
