Les Éléments d'algèbre de Sylvestre-François Lacroix sont traduits en 1818 à Harvard College. La parution du manuel participe à la réforme du curriculum, qui reposait jusque-là sur des ouvrages britanniques, à la présentation et aux contenus très différents pour ce qui concerne l'enseignement de l'algèbre. Le changement provoqué par l'introduction de cette traduction dans l'enseignement supérieur et l'édition américains est manifeste car il vient bouleverser l'horizon d'attente des lecteurs. À partir des années 1830, si les adaptations de manuels français d'algèbre se poursuivent et viennent alimenter l'édition en matière d'enseignement, elles proposent des transformations de plus en plus spectaculaires des textes français, pour les accorder aux usages domestiques. L'hybridation des méthodes anglaises et françaises trouve alors sur le territoire américain une expression particulièrement vivace et féconde, notamment dans le corpus des adaptations de l'ouvrage de Louis Bourdon, Les Éléments d'algèbre.
Sylvestre-François Lacroix's Éléments d'algèbre were published at Harvard College in 1818. The book came with the modernization of a curriculum that had relied on British textbooks the presentation and contents of which were very different. As it changed the expectations of American readers, this translation also changed learning methods. From 1830, adaptations of French algebra textbooks continued to be published but they offered more and more significant transformations of the French books, in order better to fit local needs. The mixture of French and British methods found fertile and long-lived expression on the American soil, in particular within the corpus of adaptations of the French Eléments d'algèbre by Louis Bourdon.
