Valeurs zêta multiples. Une introduction

Soit $\underline{s}=(s_1,\cdots ,s_k)$ un $k$-uplet d’entiers positifs avec $k\ge 1.$ Pour $s_1\ge 2$, la série

$$\sum _{n_1>\cdots >n_k\ge 1}{n}_1^{-s_k}\cdots n_k^{-s_k}$$

converge et sa somme est notée $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)$. Dans le cas $k=1$ il s’agit simplement des valeurs de la fonction zêta de Riemann aux entiers positifs. Quelles relations algébriques existent entre ces nombres ? Le produit $\zeta \left(s^{\text{'}}\right)\zeta \left(s^{\text{'}\text{'}}\right)$ de deux valeurs de fonctions zêta multiples est une combinaison linéaire de $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)$, comme on le voit facilement en multipliant les séries : c’est le produit de mélange lié aux séries. D’autre part une autre expression pour le nombre $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)$ est donnée par une intégrale itérée (intégrale de Chen); cela fournit une autre relation quadratique exprimant de nouveau le produit $\zeta \left(s^{\text{'}}\right)\zeta \left(s^{\text{'}\text{'}}\right)$ comme une combinaison linéaire de $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)$ : c’est le produit de mélange lié aux intégrales. On conjecture que ces deux produits de mélange suffisent à décrire toutes les relations algébriques entre les nombres $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)$. Se pose alors le problème d’étudier l’algèbre engendrée par des générateurs (les multizêta symboliques) indexés par les $k$-uplets $\underline{s}$ et définie par les relations données par ces deux produits de mélange; on obtient ainsi l’algèbre MZV, dont Écalle est en train de déterminer la structure. Pour définir des séries génératrices permettant de coder simultanément tous les multizêta symboliques il convient d’inclure les $\underline{s}$ correspondant à des séries divergentes (avec $s_1=1$). Nous mentionnons enfin brièvement quelques résultats de l’équipe de Petitot sur les polylogarithmes, et encore plus brièvement plusieurs sujets connexes.

For positive integers $s_1,\cdots ,s_k$ with $s_1\ge 2$, the series

$$\sum _{n_1>\cdots >n_k\ge 1}{n}_1^{-s_k}\cdots n_k^{-s_k}$$

converges and its sum is denoted by $\zeta (s_1,\cdots ,s_k)$. In case $k=1$ this is nothing else than the value of the Riemann zeta function at the point $s_1$. What are the algebraic relations between these numbers? these numbers? The product of two multiple zeta values is again a multiple zeta value: this is easily checked by multiplying the two series, and using a shuffie» product. An example is

$$\zeta \left(2\right)\zeta \left(3\right)=\zeta (2,3)+\zeta (3,2)+\zeta \left(5\right),$$

There are other quadratic relations between these numbers, which arise from another expression of $\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)=\zeta (s_1,\cdots ,s_k)$ as a (Chen) iterated integral:

$$\zeta \left(\underline{s}\right)={\int }_{{\Delta }_p}{\omega }_{{ϵ}_1}\left(t_1\right)\cdots {\omega }_{{ϵ}_p}\left(t_p\right),$$

with the following notation : $p=s_1+\cdots +s_k$, the sequence $({ϵ}_1,\cdots ,{ϵ}_p)$ of elements in {0, 1} is defined by writing the word

$$x_0^{s_1-1}{x}_1\cdots x_0^{s_k-1}{x}_1=x_{{ϵ}_1}\cdots x_{{ϵ}_p}$$

on the alphabet $X=\{x_0,x_1\}$, the differential forms ${\omega }_{ϵ}$ are defined by

$${\omega }_0\left(t\right)=\frac{dt}{t}\text{et}{\omega }_1\left(t\right)=\frac{dt}{1-t}$$

and ${\Delta }_p$ is the following simplex in ${ℝ}_P$:

$${\Delta }_p=\{\underline{t}\in {ℝ}^p;1>t_1>\cdots >t_p>0\}.$$

Again this yields an expression of the product of two multiple zeta values as a linear combination of multiple zeta values, a simple example being

$$\zeta \left(2\right)\zeta \left(3\right)=\zeta (2,3)+3\zeta (3,2)+6\zeta (4,1).$$

The main conjecture is that these two types of relations are sufficient to describe all algebraic relations between these numbers. This subject has deep connections with many other mathematical topics: combinatoric (the theory of quasisymmetric functions, Radford’s Theorem and Lyndon words), Lie and Hopf algebras, Écalle’s theory of resurgent series, Goncharov’s work on mixed Tate motives on Spec$\mathbb{Z}$, polylogarithms, monodromy of differential equations, the fundamental group of the projective line minus three points and Belyi’s Theorem, the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$, the group of Grothendieck-Teichmüller, knots theory and Vassiliev invariants, $K$-theory, Feynman diagrams and quantum field theory, quasi-triangular quasi-Hopf algebras and Drinfeld’s associator ${\Phi }_{KZ}$ (related to the connexion of Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov).
