This paper is based on the notes of the short course that we delivered on January 5, 2017 at Institut Henri Poincaré on the occasion of a session devoted to Mathematical Statistics and organized by the Société Française de Statistique. Its purpose is to give a brief account of the method of ρ -estimation as an alternative to the MLE (Maximum Likelihood Estimator) as well as the optimality and robustness properties of ρ -estimators. This method is in the lign of a long series of works initiated by celebrated statisticians like Sir Ronald Fisher (with the MLE in the 20’s) or Lucien Le Cam (with estimators based on tests between Hellinger balls in the 70’s) with the purpose of building estimation methods with good properties for a wide class of statistical problems. More recently, Birgé, building d- then T-estimators, extended Le Cam’s results in various directions, in particular towards robustness and adaptation. We shall emphasize the strong connections between ρ -estimators and their predeccessors, mostly the MLE and shall show, with well-chosen exemples, that the ρ -estimators do behave in a better way from various respects.
