Annales de l'Institut Fourier, Tome 24 (1974) no. 4, pp. 121-155.

We prove that the category of von Neumann algebras is equivalent to the category of self dual facially homogeneous complex cones where a cone in a real Hilbert space E is called: 1) facially homogeneous when for each face F of the operator δ= (Projection on F-F) - (Projection on F -F ) is a derivation of (i.e. e tδ =tR) ; 2) complex when one has given a complex Lie algebra structure on the real Lie algebra of derivations of , modulo its center. We show that an ordered space M, M + is underlying a von Neumann algebra M if and only if for some self dual scalar product s on M the completion of M + is facially homogeneous and complex.
